After the US capture of the island from the Japanese army and subsequent capture of Tinian, the US was able to launch B-29 bombers to attack Japan. Eventually, the Enola Gay took off from Tinian's runway Able, dropped a bomb on Hiroshima, which brought about Japan's surrender four days later. Many war buffs and tourists who visit Saipan wish to take away some memento of their unique war tour.
